Shatzer - If you're not dead, got a question for ya:

I've been going through your Battletech cards to get them ready for auction. Hell of a nice collection, BTW.

Are you sure this is everything? I think you may have a binder or two still in hiding.

I don't have any Inner Sphere Mechs from A-G.
The Command: Resource cards appear to be missing T-Z.

Thanks...

Son of a...... I miss the last day of coh, Jeremy, can i bring my machine over to your place after 8 pm, or at 8 am?

Published by Anonymous on 4/21/2004 04:50:00 PM

Well guys, Dustin tell me he won't make it tommorow night until about 8 at least. So you have a decision to make. Either the three of you face off against the undead horde (and one of you is suddenly on his own, since you'd split up), or we wait until Dustin shows and hold a short session. Or we table it for another two weeks. I'm not really pleased with any of these options, although I can make any of them work, so I'm leaving it up to the players.

Besides, with tommorow being the last day of CoH beta, I couldn't make an impartial judgement.

Jeremy--So what are the char death penalties? Sounds like City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies should license out the details for their char appearance system... Bah. Racial limitations on classes, especially when there are only two classes, are stupid. What the games calls "dwarven females" are halflings, or maybe gnomes. They shoulda done some extra programming to create "little anime boys" aka male counterparts, and create a real female dwarf.

Dustin--Aww... and the group was so looking forward to getting random discounts at CK... ^_^ Hey, you'll have money. Does personal bidet service pay well? ;)

Published by John on 4/14/2004 10:41:00 AM

Jeremy--Hey I would like to try Lineage out. And I'll be sure to avoid Grokknock in the spawn area. It sounds like a world in which Grodnick would like to be resurrected :)

Published by Anonymous on 4/14/2004 04:18:00 AM

Lineage. S'ok. S'also kinda' amusing. Grokknock the Orc Warrior levels up to L3 in the noob spawn area working on the Tutorial. Then I walk back to the are where da' Noobs spawn in. I wonder if it's possible to attack another player...

I walk up to a freshly-spawned character, yell "Grokknock angry! Graargh!" and beat the poor bastard down.
No PvP restrictions in the Tutorial area. Brilliant.

I'm already dissapointed. Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, and Dwarves are what you have to chose from. Each race has a male and a female base avatar. Each character has the choice of exactly two hair colors, two faces, and four hairstyles. Giving you a grand total of 16 freakin' variants.

You have two options- fighter or magic user. And to make it even more of a pisser, Dwarves don't even have the option to go Magic. "Warrior Type." That's all. So no Stumpwater Jack...

Dwarf males are old, bearded, gruff warriors. Dwarf Females look like 13-year old Anime girls with pigtails. Just thinking about that is illegal in 37 states.

I *disdainful sniff* prefer to rely on the gifts from Lolth and my house.
But if you wish to trust tainted weapons, I won't deign to judge you. *sugary-sweet smile*.
I believe I can ask Lolth to help remove the *sneer* "elven taint" from those weapons, but she will almost certainly require a donation of appropriate value in return for that assistance.

Shatz- Yeah, thanks. Don't know what the hell happened, but for some reason once the screen-saver kicked on, the Brightness/Contrast settings in the Color Configuration setup actually started working. They were both pushed over to 100%. System would re-boot, sit there nicely, but as soon as you'd hit a key or touch the mouse, it would go bright again.

If you looked at the screen at an extreme angle, you could just make out the icons, and I re-set the brightness/contrast settings back to something normal. Fixed the problem. Rebooted, everything seemed fine. Then it did it again some half-hour later- had to go back in and re-adjust the brightness settings...

" I want more in my online game."

You want a chat-room with pretty pictures. Like AOL, but with green chicks in fleshwraps...
Mmmn... Oola... :)

"Well at lest in Swg, when I come against a rule that I didn't know, I don't get bitched at for five fucking minutes. You know you have a problem, when just about every form of entertainment you have pisses you off."

As I've said before- when you start that DM powertripping shit specifically to fuck with players you don't like, and get completely blatant with it (which you do) I'm gonna' ride your ass about it. Don't take it too personally. So far, me being a total dick about a few stupid little inconsistancies with the book has just been convienient. ;)

Oh, BTW... I finally hoked up the Playstation to try out Drakengard. It's sweet as hell. It's basically Dynasty Warriors 2 combined with Panzer Dragoon. You either run around on the ground killing bad-guys, or fly around on the dragon in arial missions versus airships and stuff. You can also fly the dragon around on the "ground" missions, and burninate people by the hundreds. Muaahaha...

Published by John on 4/07/2004 10:53:00 PM

Caroline--This system cuts down on a lot of power gamers, not all but most. This comes from a ton of ex-Everquest players, not me, that are in my guild. System is brilliant in it's simplistic nature. Now if they would just do away with the broken ass TKMs........ By the way how many online games like this have you played? Being a mac user and all :-P

Dustin--Yes I have the books. You are playing a TKM, master doc, Imperial. They think you are one of them! Go reb find a nice guild and have a good time. Also try something else with Darsh, you don't have to be a doc or TKM forever! It really is fun to try other things, trust me.

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 10:38:00 PM

shatz-- Do you still have a set of books for paranoia, and/or all flesh must be eaten.

Well at lest in Swg, when I come against a rule that I didn't know, I don't get bitched at for five fucking minutes. You know you have a problem, when just about every form of entertainment you have pisses you off.

The only reason I still play swg, is the interaction with other characters, the game would not be half as fun, if my imperial zarbrak wasn't good hunting buddy's with lok, an entire wookie only rebel guild.

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 05:53:00 PM

I understand that perspective of friendship. I just disagree that levelling has to be removed to get that friendship.

Published by John on 4/07/2004 04:37:00 PM

I look at my Star Wars character the same way I look at my old pencil and paper characters. I've had to give up my Bounty hunter stuff to get pistoleer, which means the weapons I use have changed. So what? I have built a reputation and friendships with the other characters on the server that makes the game fun. I can't walk thru a starport without bumping into a guildmate, or someone that I've hunted with. And of course they want to chat with old troggie! This is the fun part of the game to me, not what I can or can't kill and with what I do it with. Plus soon I'll be able to open my salon where I can do hair and nails and sell my latest strapless gown design! I guess if you really need to be a 60th level sorcerer that can go to the dungeon of big greenie meenies so be it. I want more in my online game.

Of course this all being said I'm all over the Worlds of Warcraft beta!

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 03:48:00 PM

I understand that there's a game balance problem between high-level and low-level characters. However, removing the level advancement system after a certain point does not fix this problem.

The problem of high-level characters helping or not helping newbies is a matter of player attitudes, not a problem with game mechanics.

The main solution I can think of is difficulty zones or levels. If a new character goes to a high level or a difficult place, they get killed. If a medium or high level character goes there, they get XP.

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 02:09:00 PM

Larry- Leons.

Ask Jeremy how much fun it is to be either too high or too low a level to find groups to "adventure" with.

Indeed. A critcal flaw in the Final Fantasy Online system. Parties are REQUIRED beyond level 10 or so (if you want any hope at all of actually getting anywhere.) Except the way the XP system is laid out, all characters receive a percentage of the XP total based on the level of the HIGHEST player. (Not a party average.)

A L2 Black Mage (ranged offensive spells) and his L6 Fighter buddy team up on an enemy, they'll get a little less than half the HP as if both characters were L6.

In addition, if ANY member of the party is more than 2 levels from the "party average" the entire party suffers severe XP penalties. (A "level 10" party can consist of L8-L12 characters- +/- 2, and be an efficient fighting machine. The second that L12 characters levels to L13, XP begins to suck again, until the L8 character catches up...)

This was done to prevent a 70th level White Mage from "power-leveling" a new character by powerboosting it with defensive/healing spells, and letting them go buck-wild on creatures far higher than they should be able to solo. (However, this still doesn't work, because the 70th level White Mage can STILL assist the noob- by following them around UNGROUPED and casting the same spells. It's stupid...)

That still doesn't change the fact that my SWG character has progressed as far as it can, and the only way to "continue" with the character is ripping it back to Noobie-level and starting over.

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 11:55:00 AM

whose game is tomm or thursday?

Published by John on 4/07/2004 11:31:00 AM

Caroline--Yes and every other game out there has High level characters that couldn't give a damn about new players. Galaxies is the only game that prevents that from happening. Ask Jeremy how much fun it is to be either too high or too low a level to find groups to "adventure" with.

Published by Anonymous on 4/07/2004 02:41:00 AM

John--Star Wars Galaxies does not have a reasonable experience-based leveling system. Once you hit the max number of skills and profession levels, you can't do anything else to improve your character without paying for it or making it yourself (which usually requires paying for materials). When you consider the level limit and how much nerfing the classes have gotten, the game seems irrelevant. Although it is very pretty and induces fangirlism. The socialization aspect isn't bad, but every single other rpg system i can think of allows guilds and has levels.

Jeremy--Have you read the amber novels and/or the amber diceless system corebooks? I've got a friend who's willing to give you a thorough opinion of the system, but he needs to know what you know first.

Published by Anonymous on 4/06/2004 06:44:00 PM

shatz-- Do you still have a set of books for paranoia, and/or all flesh must be eaten, I would like to try and run either or both of theses systems. t

Published by Anonymous on 4/06/2004 03:47:00 PM

Shatz- I might be. Depends on what a Master CH/BH is worth on the open market. If it doesn't sell for enough, I'm going to continue with my hologrind.

I'm at a position now where I'm going to have to basically rip the character apart if I want to continue leveling.

Published by John on 4/06/2004 03:34:00 PM

Jeremy--No more Atropos? Are you quitting Galaxies?
